A Poem: Living

Grace is the free gift of God’s enablement.

– Mildred Bangs Wynkoop

I am a living thing,

with a body, a soul, and a mind —

living, even with a body broken, sometimes unfamiliar;

living, even with a soul sometimes unexplainably sick;

living, even with a mind finite, failing me into frustration.

I am a living thing

filled daily with merciful breath,

the neurons in my brain guided by fingers of grace,

a whisper at my ear, in my heart,

quietly, tenderly breathing,

“I love you. Yes, that’s it — well done. One foot in front of the other, now.”

Living, not alone —

even when the whisper feels far, He’s not;

I know, for there is breath in the lungs of my broken body;

neurons firing off in my brain as I blink;

my soul, maybe sick, still calling out His name.

I am a living thing in the hand of my Maker,

who alone is able to take me

from glory to glory,

until, one day, my mind, soul, and body

are no longer broken, sick, or unsatisfied.

  1. This is beautiful and true. Jon’s dad passed away 2 days before Christmas and this hope of restoration is a true comfort. And the line: even when the whisper feels far; He’s not. Yes and yes. Again, so beautiful and true. 🧡🧡
